Specimen data for Pargasite.

Tom Mortimer catalog number: 1657

Identification method: EDS analysis. A first EDS analysis gave:

Na (1.04 KeV) = 54; Mg (1.24) = 172; Al (1.49) = 708; Si (1.74) = 1391; K (3.31) = 103; Ca (3.69) = 270; Mn (5.90) = 54; Fe (6.40) = 249
Background 2KeV/10KeV = 34/9
Amphibole with Si/Al ~ 2/1. Ca>Na>K. Fe dominant. Annalyst suggested ferropargasite.

A second EDS analysis, below, concluded pargasite, with insufficient Fe to be classified as ferropargasite.

Notes: The amphibole "hornblende" has long been reported from the Franconia Iron Mine. Hornblende is now recognized as an amphibole group name. The pargasite species is a member of the same calcic amphibole group as ferrohornblende.
